"Ginger has developed an attitude... and a tail!"
Two sisters, obsessed by suicide and death in general face what they believe to be a werewolf. One of them is attacked and repeatedly bitten, but survives.
In the following days, she is victim of strange changes that their parents explain by comparing them to the first symptoms of menstruations. However, things worsen: Ginger, the infected sister, witnesses phenomenal hair growth, she becomes aggressive and also grows a tail.
Her new boyfriend returns from a restless night with her scraped and bruised. He too seems to have been infected. The two sisters had promised to never age but Ginger is now changing very quickly. She no longer has any pity for her sister.
Another point for the Canadians! I was not particularly proud of what Canada had to offer in terms of movies up to date but Ginger Snaps is an exception.
The movie features a very attractive young woman and another that probably would have preferred being aborted. Both of them have a pessimistic attitude without really being gothic. To add to the situation, their mother is coloured, happy to be living and articulate. One has to wonder what their father has done but this contrast creates a very interesting atmosphere.
By now, you must know how much I hate magic potions, talismans and other miracle solutions when comes the time to fight evil but Ginger Snaps has presented an innovation. Pure silver has no effect on werewolves but a certain plant has the ability to slow down the process. What accommodated me however was the fact that no one was sure of anything and that the product doesnít take effect in a fraction of a second.
I loved the way that certain taboos where brought up without being vulgar. For example, Ginger is explicitly menstruated during the movie: we can see blood run down her leg, on the floor and wherever it wanted. Also, because hairy women arenít usually considered attractive by occidental standards, the producer shows us that she is changing without grossing us out (Ginger finishes shaving her legs and hairs cover the floor but none are left on her legs; Ginger is dressed sexy without showing too much skin, etc).
Ginger Snaps develops never before seen aspects of werewolf movies and that makes it an excellent movie.
- Trina panics, slips in a pool of milk and splits her head on the counter.
- The werewolf that bit Ginger is hit by a van.
- The suicide scenes of the introduction credits.
- The final scene
- A dead dog, lying on the ground, his guts spread on the floor.
- Ginger (Katharine Isabelle)
