"There are no more children left to kill in Springwood and Freddy wants to expand his horizons…"
Only one adolescent has survived the wave of murders in the town of Springwood. These children have all died in their dreams, murdered by the claws of Freddy. John suspects Freddy is using him to spread to new horizons, where he could kill even more.
After almost losing his life in a nightmare, he loses his memory. He adventures in a neighbouring town and finds refuge in a reform house where he meets three other troubled adolescents. His tutors have trouble believing what he is saying and invite him to sleep.
Maggie, a social worker at the centre, starts dreaming. Her dreams describe a women being beaten and strangled by a sadistic man. To get to the bottom of the story, she will, with the help of John and the others, adventure to Springwood to resolve the mystery off the deaths of all the children throughout the years. This is all Freddy needed. John doesn’t remember why he feared this town but knows that it is cursed.

The Nightmare on Elm Street series has gone from an intense seriousness to a comedy of horror. I liked the series up to date and would have enjoyed seeing it end this say. What is most saddening in Freddy's Dead: The Final Nightmare is the incessant humour that overwhelms the dramatic aspect of the murders. The characters in the series have been so attaching that, up to date, every loss was tragic. What makes the sixth part a bit impersonal is somewhat due to the characters. One of them is amnesic, another one deaf, one drugged and there is the rebel feminist. All other characters are adults.
The introduction credits are among the best I have ever seen. We see John Doe sitting in a plane, being ejected, crashing and being startled out of his dream. A few minutes later, he is tumbling down a steep hill. If there is something I love in this movie are the introduction and conclusion credits. The murders are exaggerated by still amusing. Once again, this is not what I wished for.
However, I must admit having like the deaths of Carlos, Spencer and John. Carlos, the one with the hearing difficulty, has a hearing aid installed. Then, Freddy rubs his steel nails on a blackboard until the victim’s head explodes. Spencer, the drugged one, hallucinates a Mario Bros style game and must defeat a digital version of Freddy. John, for his part, falls from sky and lands on a nailed piece of wood.
The strategies that the heroes use to annihilate Freddy is not that bad but could have been better thought out. After all, we have already seen a few heroes pull him out of the dream world to make him vulnerable and kill him. I don’t see why this strategy wouldn’t have worked here.
This movie was presented in 3D in theatres when it came out, a very interesting concept for a finale. In conclusion, the scenery is astonishing, the actors excellent but different from what we are used to see.
