Friday the 13th Part VIII: Jason Takes Manhattan

"Jason travels to New York…"

Not far from Crystal Lake, a cruise ship departs for New York with, as passengers, a class of students. Jason, who just happened to pass by, hops on board, without being seen by the passengers or crew.

A storm is about to start and Jason takes advantage of the situation to take the lives of a few members of the crew and then starts chasing the students. Rennie is participating in the activity even if his tutor and legal father had strongly disapproved with the trip. She ignores the reason but when she approaches a body of water, she becomes terribly afraid. She knows that it has something to do with her past but can't remember what.

The cadavers pile up as the boat gets closer to New York and a few passengers have suspected Jason’s presence all along.

Originality

No one seems to enjoy this sequel. I, on the other hand, find it not bad at all. The only thing that really bugged me was Jason’s new power: he can now teleport himself wherever he wishes. It is the first in the series to not be set in the woods, which hurts the atmosphere.

The characters are everything but attaching, which quickly brings us back to the reality of the other Friday the 13th’s and that is fine. The story revolving around Rennie doesn’t take up the whole scenario but gives life to multiple incoherent events. For example, the ghost of Jason when he was ten years old constantly comes back to haunt her, but a reason related to her past.

Sadly, the conclusion explains all the apparitions and the ending is terrible and deprived of logic. They get off the boat in the financial district, walk a bit in the sewer system and magically end up in Times Square. It gave me the impression that the budget could not permit blocking up Times Square for more than an hour and they had to minimize the number of scenes filmed there.
