"Mary Lou's ghost won't allow anyone else to become prom queen..."

During the fifties, a girl was elected prom queen, right after cheating on her friend Bill. To obtain revenge, Bill tossed a stink bomb on his girlfriend but what happened wasn’t exactly what he hoped for: her dress caught fire and the girl burned to death.

Thirty years later, Bill still frequents the same school but this time, he is the director. His son is a student and has recently met a timid girl named Vicky. After her friend’s death, Vicky slowly changes. She barely notices it herself. Marilou, the prom queen, cheated on her boyfriend with a man that is now a priest. This man feels what is truly going on: Marilou is back and she has found the perfect body to incarnate to attack the man that made her a ghost.

This film bounces from nowhere to make the public think it will continue Prom Night. This is not true. Anyhow, this is nor good or bad. The first was a conservative slasher: a revenge story without any occult notions. Hello Mary Lou: Prom Night 2 innovates by being a film featuring a ghost seeking revenge in a high school.

There is a sub-genre of horror that is popular and it is well exploited here. It is horror filled with sarcastic humor. It is the type of humor that makes a scene where the heroin has her finger licked by a toy-horse amusing. It is also the type of horror that succeeds in showing a slideshow of incest scenes in such a manner that it will make you laugh. This film contains multiple surprises: it has a nudity sequence, a lesbianism sequence, a corruption of a minor scene but also features moments of well thought-out violence.

It is a good film if we don’t pay attention to these details. We must rather notice all that has been inserted. It is easy to feel that the authors tried to fill the story with a bunch of different elements. This gives us an interesting mix and it is hard to comment the global picture. The invisible murderer does most of the murders, just as they would have been done by telekinesis. It is an under-exploited idea for slasher movies and it is what makes this movie even more interesting. We can detect a nostalgic feeling by the way the fifties are presented and I have the impression this was the producer’s basic wish.

This film will have an important impact on the third in the Prom Night series which also exploited this humoristic flavor.
