"Teenagers on Elm street have been having terrible nightmares lately…"

Nancy and her friends have been having many nightmares lately. A man is haunting their nights. Their dreams take a more serious turn when Nancy gets hurt in her dreams: her wounds persist in the real world. One night, her friend Tina gets mutilated in her sleep, under her boyfriend's horrified eyes.

The circle of friends refuse to sleep. They fight their sleepiness using coffee, soft drinks and make sure no one falls asleep. There does not seem to be any way to end to this terror but Nancy is ready to fight the murderer of her dreams: Freddy Krueger.

This movie makes us dive into a scenario where terror is inevitable. The fear of our own sleep is gripping. The story is simple, as are all post-adolescent movies, but it is based on the constant fear of sleeping. What makes this movie different is that physical strength and being brave does not help.

The special effects are up to the standard of the year in which the movie was made, the theme music quickly became a classic that was re-used in the other movies of the series. What I dislike the most is the fact that the characters, whether they be friends, lovers or family, do not seem to care for each other very much. Thus, the dramatic aspect of the deaths is greatly diminushed.
