Body Snatchers

"Something bad is going around… and everyone seems to be catching it."

Marti, a teenaged girl, moves to a military base with her reconstructed family. Before their arrival, a man surprises her in the bathroom of a gas station and tries to stop her from leaving. He seems delirious. He warns her of events to come… but she is scared and doesn’t take his arguments into consideration.

It quickly becomes obvious that something isn’t right. Extraterrestrial life has arrived on Earth and is contaminating mankind. Cocoons hidden inside homes on the base wait for the inhabitants to fall asleep to clone them. Once the human is copied, it withers to dust and is thrown in the trash.

Marti has just made two new friends on the base. Even before feeling at ease, she discovers the conspiracy that has already spread throughout the territory… and even further.

Body Snatcher is the second remake of the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. While the first two shined because of their paranoia-like atmosphere, this one just barely misses the mark. Still, it isn’t a bad film. The main problem is that it doesn’t spend enough time to settle in and is therefore less effective.

The film has its moments of fame: really terrifying situations if we allow ourselves to be follow the flow of the film. Thankfully, the film only scratches the surface of science-fiction as it emphasizes its horror aspect.

It is easy to sympathize with Marti and her half-brother. They are simple and caught off guard. Here, as the action takes place on a military base, the cloned individuals are now armed warriors which contrasts with the simplicity of Invasion of the Body Snatchers and its first remake, where plain citizens succumbed to the metamorphosis.

Body Snatchers is a good film. It is at times predictable, simple but is a decent remake. Those who really enjoy zombie flicks and are of the new generation will be delighted by this variation that offers a whole new definition for the word survival.
