BROKEN is a twenty minute short and is rather cross-genre. Let’s just say that if The Matrix was a darker movie, it would be BROKEN’s bigger brother. BROKEN definitely represents a victory for low budget cinema. With its hundred impeccable special effects (mainly gun shots, but still), its twisted characters and its many twists, BROKEN is one of the best shorts I have had the chance to view.
As BROKEN’s mysteries unfold, others will be added to the list. It’s very effective but backfires in a sense. Considering BROKEN stacks mysteries, the end twist takes the easy way out to explain things. It’s nothing disastrous but it has been done so many times it has lost its effect.
The characters may be underdeveloped but what we get to know about them is enough to sympathize for them or hate them. The visual quality of the film will charm you from the get go. More importantly, BROKEN never slows down or bores the viewer. The pace is ideal!
BROKEN may very well suit even those who aren’t into independent low budget flicks!
